The wife is an Asian immigrant. Her English is good but it's not great. So she has problems expressing herself in the right way. This is what happened.

We went out to dinner. Our server was a normie white guy. My wife ordered the kimchi fried rice.

When the food came, my wife complained to me that the food was cold. Now, I eat at this restaurant all the time. They have a huge menu but the food always comes out quickly and is always hot.

So I look at the rice, and sure enough, it's cold. I asked the wife if she had been eating it already before she said it was cold to make sure she didn't just leave it sitting around. She had only eaten one bite, so I said we can just get a new order.

We call the server over. I really want to tell him the rice was cold, but the wife takes over. She says "this rice is no good. It's very cold. I don't like it. I want a new order."

The server stops, looks at us both in shock, looks like he's about to say something. Then he doesn't. He's visibly angry but says "I will bring a new order."

We wait about ten minutes for the new order. I can see the server in the kitchen talking to the cook and pointing over to us. The cook keeps looking at us and sneaking glances and I can tell that he's not happy.

I get up and go to the bathroom. On my way I stop at our server and say "hey man, sorry about the rice, I'm sure it was a mistake. We just want a good dinner."

He says to me "I'm just a server. I don't have anything to do with the food. She wanted to insult me."

I was like "oh, I'm sorry. My wife is from Asia and has trouble with her English."

He says "Asia? I'm from Asia! Taiwan! She was speaking Mandarin to me."

So I go back to the table and tell my wife that our server was from Taiwan and that he speaks Mandarin.

When he comes back with the new rice, my wife asks him "where are you from?"

Taiwanese server says "I'm from Taiwan."

Wife says "I thought you were Chinese."

Taiwanese server says "Taiwan is not China. Taiwan is its own country."

Wife says "no it's not."

I interrupt and I'm like "yes it is."

They keep arguing until I tell my wife we need to shut up. So then they stop.

We finish the meal and get ready to go. Taiwanese server comes over to us and says "how was everything?"

And my wife was like "well, I didn't like your attitude."

And I was like NOOOOO.

Taiwanese server was like "I don't want to argue with you. I have better things to do."

And we left.

Fuck.

EDIT: some people have asked why I didn't handle the situation properly. Some have said I should have ordered for a wife since she has a hard time with English.

That would have come off as sexist and insulting.

Some people have said I should have ordered the food to be hot. That would have come off as very Karen-ish.

Some have said I should have interfered and stopped the conversation between the Taiwanese server and my wife. My wife would have seen that as an insult.

It's just one of those situations where there is no winning. You can't control your spouse all the time.

Honestly, I think the best thing I could have done was speak to my wife about this beforehand. Even though I eat at the restaurant often, we had a babysitter last night and I should have realized that my wife would have problems expressing herself.

Fuck.

EDIT2: people keep asking what my wife said was wrong. Not sure why I have to explain this but... Many Chinese are nationalistic and believe Taiwan is part of China, not its own nation. So the Taiwanese don't like to be considered Chinese. They are proud to be Taiwanese.

Of course my wife doesn't think this way. She's just ignorant. Taiwanese server just graduated college and his girlfriend is Chinese. So it was an awkward situation.

EDIT3: some people are saying that this was a cultural misunderstanding but that the Chinese are dicks... I'm not trying to be a white knight for the Chinese here. I'm just saying that being nationalistic is not being a dick. I'm American, and I love it when people are proud to be American. All the time. Every day. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure you all love your own countries, and there's nothing wrong with that.

EDIT4: I feel some people are saying that my wife is an AH for not speaking good English, even though she's an immigrant. As if she had a choice. I don't speak a second language. If I had to immigrate to another country, I don't think I would be able to learn the language. I don't see why it's anyone else's fault for not learning a second language.
