All civilizations are built upon the blood and exploitation of the many, for the benefit of the few. This is obviously not a positive or uplifting reality for the average person, and thus elites have had to come up with clever ways to justify the suffering of the masses and to explain why they should accept their station in life.

This is the primary purpose of the three main monotheistic religions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. All three introduce a notion of Original Sin, which essentially blames the average person for the suffering of humanity. This tells us why we should be content with our station in life, and why we deserve to toil and struggle. These religions were all invented by ruling elites as a form of social control, to justify the exploitation of the masses.

In the modern era, the elites have created a new, far more clever form of spiritual social control that targets the enlightened and the self-aware. It is rooted in Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism, and gets lumped in with modern New Age spirituality. This is the notion of Past Life Karma.

The idea is that the soul is reincarnated, and that it chooses its circumstances in each new life before it is born. It chooses its parents, its social status, its genome, etc. According to this logic, the average person is poor and starving and miserable because their soul chose that path as part of its spiritual journey.

Not only does this notion justify the suffering of the masses, but it also serves to deflect blame from the ruling elites who couldn't care less whether the average person lives or dies. It gives the elites a free pass, essentially saying that, 'No, we're not to blame for your misery. You are, because you chose this path as part of your spiritual journey.'

Finally, it serves as a form of mass mind control by focusing people on their own spiritual journeys and the notion of their own personal karma, as opposed to organizing and bringing down the ruling elites who are exploiting them.
