The woman in the window

I was ten when I moved to the quiet town of Clance. When you’re ten small towns aren’t as boring as they are when you’re a teenager and honestly I found some pretty cool friends and places to hang out around my new home. But I found something I never could explain, wasn’t cool, and wasn’t a friend, it was the woman in the window.

Now you might be thinking “why in the window?” well, my house was one of these old Victorian homes with a tiny attic on the third floor, my room. And it’s one of those with a window on the sloping pitch of the roof, it’s called a dormer. So whenever I looked out the only window in my room I could see the street.

It was your average street, lots of houses, lots of families, kids my age, everyone was friendly. But one house always stood out to me, the house directly across the street.

The reason it stood out so much was because it was abandoned, we knew this because the family who used to live there one day just left not a single trace. The house was even furnished when they left. They had left in the middle of the night and never came back. And that made it perfect for my curious mind, I wanted to know why they left.

So I watched, and watched, and then one night I saw her. I can’t say she did anything, in the two years I watched her she never did anything, she just stood in the window looking out across the street but never at me, it one thousand percent was not at me because if it was I would not be writing this right now. But she stood there looking out, never moving, just looking. You could see her from about half my neighbors houses, my house had the best view however.

No one else really talked about the house across the street except when new neighbors moved in. You see we were a small street, so everyone knew each other, and because of that our street threw massive block parties that sometimes included neighbors from other streets. So at one of these parties a new family on our street asked an older family on our street why the houses across the street was abandoned. Now I can’t remember the older mans exact words but what stuck with me was when he said

“That house holds a very dark history, I really don’t want to talk about it.”

This only made me more curious and I remember asking him what he meant and he refused to tell me, so I kept watching.

I had been watching her for almost two years at this point and she hadn’t moved, I was starting to think she was a mannequin or something. And then one night she moved, I must have fallen asleep right after I looked through the window but when I woke up I could see light coming through the blinds of my window, I looked at my alarm clock it was 5:06 am. I looked out the window and saw her, this time though she wasn’t just standing there.

I couldn’t see everything she was doing because I had to keep the blinds closed so she wouldn’t see me, but I could see her arms moving, she looked like she was brushing her hair. It was weird, because her actions were so human-like, but it was still weird.

I lost interest after I was sure she was just a person and not a ghost, so I didn’t look out the window anymore. It didn’t stop me from thinking about it though, so one night I decided to go across the street and check it out, it was abandoned so why not I thought.

I walked across the street and onto the overgrown lawn and up to the massive wooden front door. I tried to open the door but it was locked, I shook and shook the door knob but it just wouldn’t open. I was just about to give up when I heard a crack under my feet, I looked down and saw a piece of paper half sticking out of the crack in the cement step I was standing on.

I pulled the paper out and saw that it was a key, there was a note on it that said, “The woman in the window.” There was an address on the key as well, 1313 Cemetery Road. So I went inside, the house had no electricity so I used a flashlight from my room to light my way, it was 11:00 at night so there was no sunlight to help.

I walked through the house looking for a basement, because that’s where the key hole would probably be. After a few minutes I found a trap door in the floorboards of the kitchen, it was locked, but then I remembered the key. I walked over to the trapdoor and tried the key, all I heard was a click of the mechanism releasing. I opened the trapdoor and shined my flashlight down into it, there was a flight a stairs leading down, so I went down.

It was so dark, I could barely see a few feet in front of me, I was starting to regret shining my light down the stairs instead of keeping it on where I was. I was about half way down when I felt something hit the floor, I shined my light down at it and saw that it was the flashlight. Now it was totally dark, so I felt my way down the last few stairs.

I reached the bottom and felt around, I was touching concrete walls on either side of me, so I was in a hallway. And it must have been a short one because I could feel a wall in front of me, and as I moved my hands up it I found a door knob, I turned it and opened the door in front of me.

As soon as I opened the door I heard the click of the door knob and a light flickered on, I blinked a few times to adjust to the brightness. I was in a small room, probably eight by eight with a single small desk in the middle of the room, and a metal door on the other side of the room.

There was nothing but a piece of paper on the desk, so I walked over and read it. This is what it said all over the paper, "Do not open the door, do not open the door, do not open the door, do not open the door.”

I was confused, why put a door labeled exit with a paper on a desk in front of it telling you not to open it. I might have never figured out why if I hadn’t seen it, the note with 1313 Cemetery Road on it.

I read the address then I remembered something, Clance Cemetery was at 1313 Cemetery Road. So I decided to go there, and see if I could figure out why all these strange things were happening.

So I left the house and walked towards the cemetery, when I got there it was dead, I was the only one there. I looked around, but there wasn’t much to look at, and I was starting to lose hope. Then I saw a grave with my name on it, it was fresh, and I could see the marks of the shovel in the dirt. I looked at the birth and death date, and I realized I had died three days ago.

Now I was absolutely lost, had I died and my spirit not left my body, if so why wasn’t I a ghost, I felt human, I could touch things and I felt normal. So I decided to get one last answer, I was going to open that door and see what I could find out.

I ran back to the house and went to the door, and turned the handle, I pushed the door open and a bright light filled the room, so once again I had to blink a few times. And when I opened my eyes I saw her, the woman in the window.

She looked the same as she had that night almost six months ago, but this time she looked different, almost scary. She looked at me and I froze. It was like my body was paralyzed, I couldn’t move, all I could do was watch what she was going to do.

She walked over to me and leaned in close, she whispered something in my ear and I blacked out. But I can still here what she whispered to me, it was the same thing that was on all that paper on the desk, "Do not open the door, do not open the door, do not open the door, do not open the door.”

That’s the last thing I remember, and because of that there is no ending to this story.
