CMV: If I wouldn't buy it with my own money, I don't want it as a gift.

I've noticed that a lot of people seem to think I am a bit of an asshole for not being overly excited by gifts. My reasoning for this is that I'd already know if I wanted something enough to buy it for myself.
I've been given things in the past such as gameboy games, clothing, and random household items that I've ended up tossing or giving away.

For example, if I don't like a movie, I won't buy it so if someone gives it to me as a gift I'll just end up giving it away.

My theory is that if I don't like it enough to spend my own money on it that I shouldn't get it at all. I'd rather people could spend their money on themselves and not on me.

tl;dr: if I don't want to pay for it I don't want it. Change my view.

Edit:
It looks like I have a lot to read through. I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks for the awards and everyone who's taking the time to comment.

Edit 2:
I thought I'd post an update. I read through all of your comments and I've had a change of heart, but not of view. I think all of the points of view I found bring valid points, but not enough to make me want to accept gifts gratefully. It seems like most of you agree with me that I should not accept gifts, but disagree on the reason why. I changed from not wanting gifts because I don't spend my own money on it to not wanting gifts because I feel like it's a burden on the gift giver. Thank you all for the discussion.

Edit 3:
Some of you are still messaging me, thank you. Please keep in mind that I stopped checking replies to this thread in 2014.
