Little girl broke my heart today :(

I’m a kindergarten teacher in a very poor neighborhood. I got to school early today to get things set up and was setting up the snack table. One of my students got there super early (parents are chronically late to pick them up and early to drop them off) so I was sitting there with her. She was playing with the play food and made a sandwich and brought it to me and said “here, you can eat this since you don’t have any lunch” and I said oh thank you I’m not hungry yet and she broke down crying and said “you don’t have any lunch? I was worried you didn’t have any lunch”. I was so distraught by this that I cried too and told her it was the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard and that she must come from the most beautiful, kind hearted family to be so thoughtful. When the other kids got there we all had a talk about how we don’t make food for the teachers because they aren’t hungry and we don’t want them to worry that we think they can’t afford food. <br><br>This little girl is one of the only kids in my class who brings lunch from home, all the others get free lunch. I can almost guarantee this little girl and her family are going through more than any other kid in my class. You can just tell by the way they talk about their weekend, their holidays, their parents and siblings. It breaks me because all I want to do is give every single one of them the life they deserve but I just can’t.
