Why give tests, quizes, etc, if the kids just cheat on them?

I have to put a new set of grades in tomorrow. The online grades are the only way most parents have any idea how their kids are doing, so I put new set of grades in every 5-7 school days.

I give a lot of quizzes, but kids cheat on them now. They also cheat on tests.

I give an assessment halfway through a unit that tells me if they can do standards A, B, C, D and E.

Then I give them chances to retake those assessments if they don’t pass.

I give a summative assessment that tells me if they can do the standards A, B, C, D, and E.

Then I give them chances to retake those assessments if they don’t pass.

Generally I have around 60 -70% of the kids pass on the first attempt, 15-20% pass on the second attempt, and parents drag their asses to school to watch their kids retake the 3rd time. I have to beg parents to come in for retakes.

Then we move on to new skills, and give assessments on those skills.

So what is the point of a quiz if I have a formative assessment that measures where they are on the skills, and a summative assessment that measures if they can do the skills?

Why don’t I just skip all the quizzes and groupwork and tests if they just cheat on them and the summative test is the one that really matters?

If I skip all the cheating, and just have summatives and formatives, will parents shut the fuck up about cheating?

What are your thoughts?
