My adventure in learning to make clothes.

I think this would apply to a lot of things but being a broke 20 year old I had to fix up some torn jeans. I was given them for free from a family friend, and I wanted to wear them. They were my first nice jeans, the problem was the beautiful white print on the back side was coming off and there was a huge hole near the bottom. The jeans were originally around 50$.

I decided I wanted to fix it, I did some research and found someone’s instructions on how to fix it, they said to use fabric paint. I first filled in the hole, then painted the white print. It was hard to get it perfectly white but it turned out alright. The instructions used white fabric paint and made the paint flat, while mine turned out glossy. I tried to mix other colors to get a more off white color, but it didn’t work. I still got all the paint off (from painting in a hurry)

While I was looking for paint, I was in the craft section with no one to guide me and no idea what to look for. I was looking for paint, and I found glitter paint and thinking it was good I bought a bottle. It was the wrong kind of paint, but I didn’t know it. I used all my paint and when it dried it cracked and started to peel. After I managed to scrape it off, I finally found the right paint. I painted the white print again and it turned out better. But the paint cracked and peeled again. I didn’t want to play around with the paint anymore, so I left it and put the jeans away.

It dawned on me that the paint was water-based and that was why it cracked. I found out that you needed to set the paint so it would be water proof, I tried mixing the paint with a sealant and it turned out lighter and mixed with the blue from the jeans and it turned out green. I wanted the white paint to be a pure white, so I had to settle with a lighter blue, I painted the rest of the print and the white on the pocket. I was happy with the way it turned out. I wore them for the first time last week, and it made me feel powerful to wear clothes I made with my own hands.

TLDR: I decided to fix my jeans for free, I had to go through 5 attempts to get it done.

Edit: I wish I had before and after photos, I didn’t think to take pictures. If I knew other people cared I would have. But I did do it for free, the paint cost me 4$ because I didn’t know what I was doing. If I ever get clothes like that again I won’t make the same mistake. I know a lot of people don’t have patience for it, but it’s a good learning experience overall and a fun DIY project if you have time.
