The best opportunity to have quality interactions in a language is when you’re training it to do a specific task

I only realized it a couple days ago. Sometimes I needed to grow a complex sentence in Polish with the help of a chatbot, and I had to be extremely precise with the instructions, so that I could train it to respond correctly. And I think I can compare this process to speaking to a native who is not perfectly sure what you mean. He wants to do the right thing but isn’t sure what you need. He asks vague questions that don’t help much, like “You want me to answer in Polish?” And then you ask “Do you speak Polish?” And he says “Yes, I speak Polish.” So you have to be very specific and ask “Do you speak Polish better than you speak English?” It’s a funny process but it’s quality practice of articulation. The chatbots are not the way to learn a language yet, but they can help.#####
