game developers who create games where the gameplay is largely outside of the game, can you explain what the fuck you were thinking

i feel like this trend has been accelerating in recent years, where games are increasingly a facade for something else gameplaywise. but you'd think outside of the normal issues like monetization abuse that would come with that, the whole "AI abuse" issue that's become prominent this year would be motivation to move away from this stuff. but i don't really see it happening.

like, what the FUCK was the thought process behind games like fortnite and apex legends that are largely played as a game by AI that is grinding for items and assets. isn't the idea of games that you, the player, play the game? it's a fucking video GAME, where AI just plays the game for you, so you can just save your way to the top.

i just don't understand how anyone could look at this concept and not see a plethora of problems associated with it. the only positive part of having AI in games is the ability to have an AI opponent you can play against, and instead this stuff is being used to combine the players and AI opponents into one concept of "AI plays the game, you just edit the script and make the cutscenes".

i see that a lot of these devs are just caving into the AI trend to get any sort of competitive advantage possible for their franchise. but how could they have thought that this would work? by any stretch of the imagination it's obviously going to be a failure.
