Can you really make friends in 40s?

I’m a 40 year old woman and recently had a big life change (divorced). I’ve realized I don’t really have many friends (always worked from home). I’m trying to put myself out more to meet others, but really struggling. A few weeks ago I went to an event and met someone that seemed really interested in getting to know me, we exchanged numbers and I haven’t heard a word from her (seems to be regularly active on social media though). I was starting to lose hope and feel like I just don’t have the personality or looks to meet others my age (I’m a bit overweight).

I had given up on the idea of making new friends until recently. A few weeks ago I saw a post from a local group on Facebook of an event that was happening today. I reached out to the person that posted it and she responded. We chatted a little bit and she ended up texting me throughout the day. Her and her husband met up with me today and we had a great time.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has had luck in making friends in their 40s? How did you meet the people that you ended up befriending?
