Your major does not have to be the same as your career

I'm a software professional and I've always been disappointed when students get major anxiety and feel like they need to choose a major that is the same as their career. It's not true. I've spoken to many college aged people who feel like they need to change their career path but feel like changing your major is a huge burden.

It's not true. Your major is not your career. You can have your major be anything you want and then have a completely different career. I've seen many people go from majoring in business to becoming programmers. I've seen many people switch from CS to consulting. It's okay to have a career unrelated to your major.

Don't get me wrong, there are some careers that require specific degrees, law comes to mind. But if you're interested in a STEM career, go for it. The degree is not overly important. And I know this might not apply to everyone. But if your feeling the pressure to change your career, it's okay. It's not the end of the world.

It's also your decision on what to do with your life. But do not feel obligated to stay in one major because you want to go into a completely different career.
