I am a college student, with a tendency to write romantic comedy.

I’m in a creative writing class, and I need to write a short story for an assignment. I want to write something people will like.

I’ve been told (and I agree) that what you like and what others like are very different things. The problem is, I rarely like anything that others like.

What I tend to like: I like romantic comedy, with a strong dialogue-based narrative, settings that are very specifically in one time, place, and culture, happy endings, and a strong sense of social commentary. I tend to write very specifically contemporary, socially conscious, 18th century drawing room comedy esc romantic comedies.

What the class tends to like: I’ve noticed that the majority of the class, as well as my instructor, tend to prefer literary fiction over genre, with a focus on imagery, symbolism, and magical realism.

The problem: I can do literary fiction, and I can do it well. I just don’t like doing it. Is it better to stick to the genre and style I like, or to try to force myself to write literary fiction, even though I am not very passionate about it?

TL;DR: I want to write something people will like, but I’m a lot better at writing something I like. How do I do this?
