After the pandemic, I got a new job– I was surprised to find out that it was to watch an abandoned child.

I got a job right after the pandemic relaxed.

I didn’t know what the job was, all I knew was that I got a paycheck. The pay was good and the hours were even better, so frankly, I didn’t have much to complain about. But I still had questions.

More than once, I had asked my boss about what my role was (not that he ever really gave me a straight answer), but I didn’t really get a good feeling from him. Not that I didn’t want the job, or anything, but I just got some sort of weird vibe from him.

“Why do I even have a job?” I asked, crossing my arms.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, the country is dead. It’s– there’s no– brands, there’s no– how is any of this still–” I broke off, frustrated, throwing my hand up. “And it’s not like I have anything better to do.”

“Well,–” he hesitated. “I mean, everything’s not quite–” he shook his head.

“Everything’s not quite what?” I asked.

“Nothing,” he said, looking away.

I raised my eyebrow. “What do you mean, ‘it’s not quite–’?”

“What I mean is–” he stopped. “Look, I know you’re wondering what your role is, but–” Brian started.

“I’m your assistant,” I said.

“No, you’re not,” he said. “I'm sorry.”

We stopped talking then because I didn’t know how to respond. I had many questions but few answers.
