She's a total asshole, but the mom in "A Christmas Story" (1983) was right to send her son to school with a stupid Christmas sweater.

A Christmas Story is a good holiday movie, but I think the writers overdid it on the obnoxiousness of the mom's Christmas sweater.

I don't remember how the contest worked. I think she won the sweater, or maybe it came with a purchase? I also don't remember how long the contest ran, but a four-month long contest would have ended just a month or so before Christmas. If the mom had won the contest two or three months before Christmas, then the Christmas theme wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm not a mom, but I sew clothes for myself and my sons. If I won a contest and received free yarn to make a sweater, it would take me two or three months to finish it.

She probably had the yarn just in time to make a Christmas sweater. It's ridiculous to say that she doesn't care about her son, so of course she's going to make the sweater for him instead of her husband or daughter.

So the little shit gets a sweater he doesn't like, but it's not like she went out to the store and bought it. It's not like she made him a sweater with a cartoon character on it. It's not like she forced him to keep the sweater. He eventually grows up and gives it to a boyfriend.

The way the mom forces her son to eat his dinner is the part where she's being a total asshole.

You can't say she's a terrible cook just because she didn't make mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes with gravy, and maybe some roasted root vegetables, are a good side dish for roast goose.

It's what comes next. When the son doesn't want to eat, she forces him. Don't fucking do that.
