I'm a floor manager in a busy restaurant. We were closed due to storm damage and I was on site doing a deep clean of the restaurant. I was in our spirits cupboard, wiping down the labels and surfaces for dust and dirt. Our wine fridge had been removed due to storm damage, so there was a space underneath the cupboards that I usually can't physically fit. I crawled inside, spiders and cobwebs covering my face, my arms reaching on the stone floor to see if there was anything that needed a clean. I'm reaching through the space with my fingertips, feeling along the ground. The floor is solid stone. I can feel along the length of it with my fingers. As I reach to my left, my hand is feeling the stone floor as it should be. But as I reach a little further, the stone floor has stopped. It doesn't feel like a floor any more. It's nothing. It's this...void. I push against it with my fingertips, and there's nothing to push against. It's weird. It feels like pushing against air. I bring my other hand over and I'm reaching to my left with both hands now, and it still doesn't feel like there's a floor. I'm feeling against the stone floor, and then there's just...nothing. I can't explain it. It feels like there's nothing there. I couldn't feel a floor. I had to crawl back out and investigate. It takes me 5 minutes to get a 12" spirit level from the tool room, and I crawl back in. I can see the stone floor, even the faint lighting in there helps me see it. So I place the level on the floor, exactly where I felt nothing with my hands. As I'm crawling in, I'm going over in my head all the possible explanations. Maybe there's a hole in the floor, maybe it's uneven and i can't see it, maybe it's the lighting, maybe I've cracked my head. I place the level on the floor, and wait a moment for it to stabilise. It does. And the bubble is perfectly between the lines. The floor is level. There shouldn't have been anything wrong with it. But it didn't feel like stone anymore. It didn't feel like a floor. I'm convinced I felt something. I'm convinced it felt like nothing.
