Why do some people equate minimalism with wealth?

I'm a single mom of 3 living in a small apartment and I consider myself a minimalist. I own a few more things than most minimalists, but I'm working towards reducing my possessions. I make $47,000 a year and struggle to make ends meet sometimes.

Why do people think it costs money to be a minimalist? It doesn't. I'm a minimalist because I don't want my kids to have TOO MUCH. I don't want to have to clean a large house full of useless junk, nor do I want to pay for TOO MUCH. And honestly, why would I want to pay for a large house that I have to buy and clean a bunch of useless junk for? That seems like a nightmare.

Minimalism is about living your life intentionally and that's all.

Edit: I should mention, I own my apartment and I use the rent from my tenants to help pay for the apartment I live in. It's a great deal and I'm really thankful for it because I wouldn't be able to afford the apartment I live in without the rental income.
