The best anime will never get a dub

I’m not sure if I’m feeling this because I’m Asian and have been disappointed by dubs for Asian media for my entire life, but I think a lot of anime are just too culturally Japanese to be properly dubbed by Western VA’s.

How are they gonna pronounce all the honorifics? How are they gonna deal with a bunch of onomatopoeias that are integral to the show? There’s a lot of anime I don’t like dubs for but I think Samurai Champloo and Kill la Kill are the most egregious examples.

Samurai Champloo has a huge martial arts/hip hop aesthetic, but it’s heavily focused on the hip hop aspect. The dubs are heavily focused on the martial arts aspect and completely drop the ball on the hip hop aspect. How many Black voice actors are out there that could pull off the hip hop aesthetic properly?

Kill la Kill has a bunch of onomatopoeias and some very Japanese names, how are they gonna work all of that in? For example, they never actually say Satsuki Kiryuin’s name. They just say Satsuki and Kiryuin with some weird pauses in between.

I’m not even gonna get into how Western dubs butcher honorifics. I swear these ppl never heard of pronouns and suffixes. I can’t pronounce Japanese honorifics either, but no one expects me to fill a professional voice acting role.

Idk, I think it’s an unbridgeable culture gap. I really don’t like subs either, but idk I think subs are just a reality of anime.
