My wife sometimes talks to herself in her sleep. It’s always random stuff; nothing made me suspicious.

“Jeff, you’re a worthless piece of—“

“Wow, you really are an ass, Jefferson.”

“I’m not doing it, Jefferson. You can go fuck yourself.”

and so on.

I’d ask her about it in the morning, but she’d always claim not to remember saying anything. It wasn’t a big deal, really.

Then things escalated.

I was in the kitchen, making a snack, just after midnight. My wife was in the living room, watching tv.

I heard her shout, “I’m not doing it, Jefferson! You can go fuck yourself.” Then I heard her laugh hysterically. This was a lot louder than normal, so I had to go check it out.

She was sitting on the couch, giggling. I asked her what was so funny, and she said nothing. It was strange, but I didn’t think much of it. I went to bed a couple minutes later. I figured she’d be right behind me, but when I laid in bed, I could hear her talking in a normal voice. I couldn’t quite make out the words, but it sounded like she was talking to someone.

I didn’t think much of it, but I did feel a little awkward. I turned out the light and went to sleep.

But then I heard my wife murmur, “yes, sir.”

It was so strange. I had to know what was going on, so I turned out the light and crept back out into the living room.

My wife was still on the couch, still watching tv. And she was still talking to someone. I couldn’t see anyone, and I’m certain no one was there. I heard her laugh, then I heard her say the same thing I’d heard earlier: “I’m not doing it, Jefferson. You can go fuck yourself.”

That’s what made me mad. That’s what made me snap. I’m not sure why my wife’s talking to herself pissed me off so bad, but it did. I called out to her, “what the fuck is wrong with you?”

She didn’t answer. She didn’t react. I thought she was ignoring me, but then I realized that she was asleep. Her eyes were closed, but she kept talking. I’m positive that she was talking in her sleep.

I couldn’t figure out what was going on. I didn’t want to bother her, so I went back to bed. I couldn’t fall back asleep, though. Instead, I listened to my wife talk.

She kept saying the same things she’d said earlier. I heard her say “Jefferson, you’re a worthless piece of—“ and “I’m not doing it, Jefferson. You can go fuck yourself.” I also heard her laugh. She sounded happy. She sounded like everything was okay.

I was reassured, but I was still confused. I didn’t know what the hell was going on with my wife, but at least she seemed happy.

I eventually fell asleep, but I was glad I got to listen to her talk while I could. I never heard her talk in her sleep again.

That was from months ago. Shortly afterwards, my wife made an announcement. She told me that she had been talking to Jefferson in her sleep for years. Then she told me that that Jefferson was no longer there.

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what was going on, but I was grateful that my wife was okay.

Then my wife told me that she wished Jefferson was still around. She said that she missed him.

That’s why I’m writing this. My wife seems not okay. She seems unhappy. I don’t know what to do.

What do I do to help my wife? How can I make her okay again?

**Edit:** Wow, this got a lot more attention than I thought it would. Thanks guys. Glad I could bring some brief joy to your day.
