People who have to fly for work, do you always ask for a hotel?

In college I worked at a store and was asked to go to training at a store about an hour away from me. I had to be there at 10am everyday and I didn't have a license, but I was expected to be there on time everyday. I just never really told them that I didn't have a license, as I didn't feel that was their problem. But I was so tired during those days, waking up at 530 am, taking 3 different buses, and then walking an hour just so I wouldn't be late. I was so tired after that week. Even though they paid to have me travel, they didn't pay for a hotel, because they assumed that there was no traffic, and that I would be driving there.

I am now looking at jobs that will require me to travel, and I am wondering if I would be able to talk with HR about having a hotel stay. I looked up how to do it on r/travel and they recommended emailing them back, but I am curious to hear if people are actually able to do it.

TLDR: I had to travel for work with only public transportation, and it was exhausting to wake up early enough to make it to work without being late. I am wondering if people ask for a hotel stay when given the opportunity.
