UPS drivers do not carry packages in their vans for no reason.

At least, I’m sure they’re not supposed to… Right?

I live in a four story walk up in the South Bronx.

So you know, there’s no elevator.

I was in my kitchen making soup and heard knocking at the front door.

I knew it was UPS, because I was gonna have a package delivered that day.

But I was in the middle of cooking, and didn’t want to leave the stove. Plus the timing was too weird.

I had already received my final delivery for the day, nearly two hours prior to the knocking at my door.

UPS drivers also don’t usually come straight to the front door. They usually just leave the package in a vestibule right near the front door.

So I wasn’t going to answer that door for anything.

I figured I’d just get a package delivered the next day.

I continued making my soup.

But the knocking didn’t stop. It became more and more frequent.

The person knocking was very inconsiderate, and seemed to be knocking at all the other doors on my floor (there are only 4 apartments per floor, so it wasn’t like it was an entire neighborhood of houses).

I decided to go to the front door and look through the peephole.

I’ve lived in this apartment for 15 years, and have never felt unsafe.

There are a good amount of families, with some younger kids, and a few elderly people.

So I wasn’t expecting to see anything too crazy.

I looked through the peephole, and saw a man in a UPS driver uniform (tan shirt, black pants, brown shoes), with a cardboard package slung over his shoulder, hanging off of his lower back.

I had already concluded that this wasn't a UPS driver.

The UPS drivers in my area were all black, tall, skinny, and African-American.

The man at my door was white, shorter and more muscular.

UPS drivers do not carry packages in their vans for no reason.

They drive around in their vans all day, and the packages are already in the van.

The delivery drivers pull up to the building, open the cargo hold in the van, and pull out the package closest to them at the time.

So why would this delivery driver be carrying a package on his shoulder?

“Hello! Hello! I have a package for you! Open the door!” He shouted, banging on my door and jingling the door knob.

Even though I’m not afraid of my neighborhood, I’m not stupid.

I quickly tiptoed away from the door and called my landlord to explain the situation.

“Someone claiming to be a UPS driver is at my door and I don’t think he actually is a UPS driver. What do I do?” I asked him in a hushed tone.

He said he’d be right there, and would look through the peephole in the vestibule (right next to the front door) and see if he could make out the package that the man was holding.

My landlord got to my door, looked through the peephole in the vestibule, and said he was going outside to confront the man.

A few minutes later, my landlord returned and said that the man had run away.

I called the police to make a report, and they came to my apartment to make a police report.

The officer said I had to be careful, and that this man was very likely a burglar, and was trying to get inside my apartment.

I’m so grateful that my landlord was able to come right away and confront the man.

I’m also grateful that I had already received my last package for the day, because who knows what would have happened if I had opened the door thinking it was an actual package.

I know it seems obvious, but the UPS driver is not going to be walking around with a random package slung over his shoulder in the middle of the day.

They drive around in their vans all day and keep the packages in the van.

If I had opened my door, or my landlord wasn’t there to confront the man, I might not be here today.
