CMV: Holy shit people, if you’re still using the excuse “it was a different time,” you need to re evaluate your moral compass.

The past couple of weeks, I’ve been seeing a LOT of celebrities unwillingly exposed as being sex offenders, racists, and just all-around shitty people. And every time this happens, there are people jumping to defend these shitty people, and using the excuse, “It was a different time.”<br><br>James Gunn tweeted some pretty messed up shit back in 2012, and people are still using that as an excuse, saying “It was 2012, there was a lot less awareness of pedophilia back then.” Body slamming someone so hard their dicks goes up their butthole isn’t something that “required awareness.” He also liked a shitload of tweets about pedophilia after the incident in 2012.<br><br>Warren Ellis literally groomed a young woman and had sex with her, and people are still using the same excuse. “It was a different time, there was less awareness of this stuff back then,” they say.<br><br>Fuck you. You’re honestly going to tell me that back in 2007 (when Ellis began his grooming) that you didn’t know that a grown man having sex with a vulnerable woman in her 20’s was fucked up? Did you ever watch the news back in 2007? Did you sleep through the news? Did you not know who Chris Hanson was? Did you not see the huge publicized incidents of celebrity pedophiles? If you’re unwilling to hold yourself accountable to basic knowledge that the majority of people know, are you ever going to be willing to learn?<br><br>In 2012, everyone SHOULD have known that pedophilia is fucked up. In 2007, everyone SHOULD have known that grooming a young woman is fucked up. If you didn’t know these things, that’s a personal choice. You have always had access to this knowledge, and you chose not to learn it.<br><br>Just because it was a different time doesn’t mean that there was ever an excuse for shitty behavior. The only thing that happened in the past few years is that dangerous people are being held accountable for shitty behavior, and that more people are calling out shitty behavior. But every piece of knowledge required to know these things are shitty and that we should be holding people accountable has been available for years. If you’re still using “It was a different time” as an excuse for shitty behavior, you’re the shitty person.<br><br>***Edit: Holy shit this blew up.
