A nice little thing to keep in mind if you have trouble with languages...

I took up Russian about half a year ago and last night during my first conversation on the phone with my tutor I was frustrated. Even though I had no problems with my grammar, I could hear the mistakes on the phone, I had problems with words and not being able to say everything I wanted to say. "This is ridiculous. I've been practicing for half a year and I'm still this far behind?" I thought.

And I explained to my tutor that I had far more problems in the language than with any other language I was learning and she just laughed and told me "Well, Russian is a Slavic language after all."

A bit taken aback by just her laughter I asked her what she meant and she explained that the human brain takes about 24 years to be able to speak its native language fluently.

She had made her point and I was just stunned at how little I actually knew and could understand.

It made me feel better and I was able to talk a lot more without worrying about the mistakes.

Maybe it's because I'm young and haven't learned many languages, but I just wanted to share this since it made me feel better.
