How I banned myself from Costco

I’ve got a new rule: I’m not allowed to step foot in Costco step foot until I eat all of the food currently in my fridge.

There’s nothing wrong with buying at Costco. A lot of things, like some fruits and canned goods, are cheaper and taste fine with a longer expiration date. But I found that if I buy something in bulk, I’m inclined to finish the entire package before it goes bad.

I bought these frozen cheese burgers for what I thought would be a fun quick dinner occasionally. The package comes with 20 burgers. I didn’t finish half of them before they were off putting to eat. I only had four of them before I started putting them in the freezer for later. I mixed them with ground beef to make meatballs for my friend’s party, gave them to family members, and made a few into sliders. It feels like I constantly had cheese burgers in my fridge because I couldn’t finish them all before they go bad.

I spent a lot of time tossing bad Costco produce. It feels like a huge waste to toss food that I should be eating. It feels like going to Costco is a step backwards in my attempt to go more zero waste.

I’m extending the same ban to Trader Joe’s, Aldi, and Sam’s Club.

Edit: to clarify, the burgers are of normal quality. They’re fine if you put them in your fridge after a day or two, but they were of poor quality when frozen. I didn’t have the freezer space to keep them frozen for more than a day.

Edit 2: I don’t have a deep freezer because I rent, and my only freezer is attached to my fridge.
