Did they really not know the atom bomb was this powerful?

It is my understanding that the scientists working on the project did not know how much damage it would do when it was set off, but surely they could estimate it a little bit. It seems insane to me that they would just set off a new bomb in the middle of New Mexico without knowing how destructive it would be. Like, what if it killed everyone in the state?
