My father, two brothers, and I recently purchased suppressors to put on our rifles as SBRs/machine guns. The suppressor was purchased as a Form 4, and this is the first silencer any of us has purchased. I want to make sure we are filling out the paperwork correctly. We have all ready to assemble SBRs/machine guns. The can will be permanently attached.

Right now my understanding is that we are going to send in the $200 tax stamp money, a completed Form 1, a copy of the Form 4 that we received for the suppressor, and passport photos for each of us, along with finger print cards for each of us. Because the barrel will not be getting any shorter (with the can attached), can we just put the overall length of the barrel, as opposed to the length to the gas port (which is what we would use if we were to put a barrel under 16 inches on it.) The shortest barrel we are going to put on is 11.5 inches, but with the can it will be over 16 inches. Also, would we list the length of the rifle with the suppressor attached or the suppressor not attached? Or does it matter? Also, would the overall length include a folding stock collapsed, or not? Also, would we be able to shoot the rifle unsuppressed and still have it be an SBR, even though we are using the suppressor to make it over 16 inches? Basically, the point of the SBRs we are making are to have shorter barrels, and then put the cans on to make the barrels shorter than 16 inches, but functional. So we would have short barrel SBRs with a silencer on them to make them a non-SBR in length. We wouldn't be putting the barrels we are currently using (which are all 16 inches or longer) onto these new SBRs.

Sorry, as I am sure you can see this is very confusing to me. I have seen posts with people using a can to make a barrel under 16 inches still be considered a non-SBR because of the suppressor, but I have also seen people say that is stupid and that it is still a SBR, so I don't know if it is legal or not.

Edit: It is kind of weird that it is legal to put a 10 inch barrel on a rifle and attach a 6 inch suppressor and not call it an SBR, but if I were to put a 6 inch suppressor on a pistol it would be an SBR.

Edit 2: I would like to thank everyone who commented. This sub is what keeps me coming back to Chambers these days. You guys are all great!
