I journaled every time I opened an app for 3 days. Even though I knew I was going to do this, it made me cringe every time I see myself pull out my phone. I also see patterns for when I use my phone the most.

I wanted to conduct an experiment to see how often I use my phone during the day. To do this, I carried a notebook and pen with me everywhere I went over the span of 3 days (Friday - Sunday). Every time I opened an app on my phone, I wrote it down, even the ones I used for work. I journaled not only the name of the app, but the time of day I opened it and how long I spent on it.<br><br>The first day was the hardest for me to keep track of because I had to get used to journaling my phone use. I forgot to write down a few apps, and I didn't specify the time for some apps. Even though I knew I was going to do this, it made me cringe every time I see myself pull out my phone. So on the second and third day, I made sure to write down almost every single app I used. As a result, this made me use my phone much less than on the first day. <br><br>The experiment went as I expected for the most part. I use my phone more often when I'm on break at work or when I'm bored. I use my phone more often when I'm with other people than when I'm alone. I use my phone more often when I'm doing something I don't want to do for too long, like cleaning up the kitchen or folding laundry.<br><br>I also see patterns for when I use my phone the most. I use my phone the most when I wake up in the morning. This is something I want to change so I'm going to put my phone in a different room and make it harder for me to reach it. <br><br>The apps I use the most are Tiktok, Chambers, Pinterest, Duolingo, Spotify, and Google Maps, all of which I used for over 30 minutes in total. I open some apps for only a few seconds, then close them, check them again a few hours later, then close them, and check them once more a few hours later. I see myself doing this with the weather app, the news app, Snapchat, and occasionally with some games.<br><br>While I don't think I use my phone too often, I still spend over half of my day on my phone. I have so many other hobbies that I wish I could do instead, but I don't have the motivation to do them when my phone is easily accessible. <br><br>To change my phone habits, I'm going to put my phone in a different room at night, set more frequent phone-free times, and do more activities in places where I can't easily access my phone. I also want to start carrying a book or a journal with me everywhere I go.
