Why do so many men on this sub seem to be acting as though these students should have died instead of the dog?

I've spent all day reading the thread about the dog and it's insane to me. I'm a dog lover, I love dogs way more than I like humans. But I do realize that dogs are animals and have flaws. Very few actually believe a dog is the same as a person. It's insane to me how much animosity people have towards these kids who were attacked. Yes it was their fault. They should be charged for it. They ruined their lives and took the life of an incredible dog. But it's clear they're gripped in panic and fear. The boy literally had his hands BITCH in the teeth of the dog and was trying to wrestle it off. Do I think they deserve to die? No, they're fuck ups, not murderers. Do I think the owner should pay for the medical bills? 100%, dog owners are responsible for their dog.

I just want to understand the mentality of people who think they should have been shot.
