Do grade schools teach basic fucking geography anymore?

I volunteered to sub a 5th grade class today. I was given worksheets and a movie, so it was pretty easy and the kids didn't do anything too out of line. But during lunch, one kid was complaining about how braking bad things are in the world and we should just "blow up the whole world and start over" or some shit like that. He then said "I'd blow up Russia, China, North Korea, and the middle east." Someone asked why the middle east? He said "because that's where all the terrorists are". I asked him what countries were included in the Middle East. He said "hm, I dunno". I asked him to find it on the world map we had hanging up on the wall. Now, this wasn't some dumb kid who couldn't do most school work. He was one of the smarter kids there. After a minute of searching he finds Iraq and says "is it just Iraq? Because I know there's a lot of terrorists there". I asked him to look up what countries are in the Middle East. This kid spends a couple of minutes doing so. After a couple of minutes he asks if Israel and Egypt are in the Middle East, which I confirmed they were. He nodded and said "I'm gonna blow up them too". I just started talking to the kids nearest me to avoid saying anything controversial or offensive. But holy shit. This kid is gonna be an adult in 7-8 years and has such drastic political views without knowing the basic geography of the world. I'm not calling him out on this post because the kid was genuinely not trying to offend anyone and was just ignorant.

Edit: I'm not saying we should let kids do whatever they want. I'm saying the curriculum is not matching up with the needs of kids today. This kid spent 2 minutes looking up something so simple. Not only that, but he thought that "the middle east" meant Iraq. This was not a dumb kid. He couldn't find the Balkan states on a map because he has never learned basic geography. How do we change this and make geography a bigger part of the curriculum?
