Over 35 years ago, I saw something that I will never forget, and never be able to explain.

When I was growing up, we lived in a small town in Tennessee. I was born there in 1944, and lived there on and off throughout my childhood and teenage years. My friends and I didn’t have much to do there other than playing in the woods and going on fishing trips. I loved that small town though, and I still live in Tennessee to this day.

One night, in the winter of 1961, I was 17 years old and in my senior year of High School. I was hanging out with my best friends, and we decided to drive out of town to this lake that was about 45 minutes away. We were just gonna fish and drink for a little while.

It was a pretty cold winter that year though, so we really just wound up driving around the woods behind the lake for a little while and smoking some cigarettes.

We had gone down a fairly long and narrow dirt road, and I don’t really remember what we were doing at the time, but we finally stopped and one of my friends said “what the hell is that?”

I looked over to my right, and there was a couple parked in a car. It was a really new and nice-looking car, and there was a man and a woman in the front seats, just kind of sitting there doing nothing.

Eventually we lost interest and continued on with what we were doing. A few seconds later, one of my friends said “Oh shit, there’s another one.”

Less than 100 feet away from us, right next to the road, there was another car. Same make and color as the first one. It was maybe a 1958 Ford Fairlane, all bright red and shiny. And again, there was just a man and a woman in the front seats. They weren’t moving, just sitting there staring straight ahead at the wheel.

I’m not positive, but I think whoever was driving the car turned it off at this point and we all just kind of sat there in silence for a second. By the time we turned a corner at the end of the road, we had seen a total of 6 cars, each one identical, and each one with a man and a woman in the front seats. Just sitting there Doing nothing.

I don’t know what the deal was, but we decided that we had all had too much to drink that night, and it was probably just messing with our heads. We had been out in the cold for hours at that point, so we decided to head on back to town.

Of all the times that I went to that lake, we only ever saw those cars one time. I never figured out what they were doing out there, and none of us ever really even mentioned it again. Proceeding to just forget about it completely.

Sometimes, though, it’ll cross my mind and I’ll sit and think about it for a while.

What were all of those cars doing out there? Who were those people?

I’ll probably never know.
