For background, I’m a 26F American woman. My fiancé (m30) is German. He is fully vaccinated and boosted. I’m fully vaccinated, with a booster coming this week.

I have one sister, my twin. She is married, and has two small children, a three year old and a one year old. My parents are in their late 50s. Everyone lives in the same city.

For Christmas, my parents planned for us to get together at our church. My sister and her family do not get vaccinated. Neither she nor her husband wears a mask. I do not want to be in a confined indoor space with them. I expressed my concerns to my parents, saying that I would rather get together outside, or postpone until my nephews are old enough to get vaccinated. I am happy to do a Zoom Christmas with them.

My parents told me that if I do not come to the church, my sister will take it as a personal rejection. They say that I am being selfish. I told them that I take COVID seriously, and that I will not risk getting sick and bringing the virus back to my household.

Today, my parents called me and told me that their plan is going forward, with or without me. I told them that I will not be attending, and that I will not change my mind. My sister then called me, and told me that I am being selfish and immature. She yelled at me, and hung up the phone.

My fiancé and I are devastated. My family is important to me, but I do not want to risk my health. I am trying to take this in stride, but it is difficult. Does anyone have any advice on how to move forward?

tl;dr My family is angry that I won’t do Christmas with them because my sister and her young children aren’t vaccinated.
