I was being stalked while on vacation in another country

I've been going to the Dominican Republic for years, usually for a week (sometimes 3-7 times a year) and we stay at all-inclusive family-friendly resorts. It's a cheap vacation spot for us, so a short flight and we can enjoy a nice beach vacation (usually in the 70-90F range). I've always been cautious when going to this country as I know it's a third world country. Still, most places we've been to have been great and the people are friendly enough. We've had little to no issues.

One evening, I (33F) decided to take my toddler (1.5 years old) for a little walk in the hotel's main area (a major cluster of restaurants, a bar, etc.). This was around dusk, and people were starting to move around more. There was a restaurant near the entrance and we stopped by for a little while to look at the menu for dinner. I had left my phone at the room. While I was reading the menu and my toddler was on the floor, a man (around 25-30 years old, looked like a normal hotel employee, wore a uniform shirt) approached me and gave me a small sheet of paper with a napkin with a drawing on it. I was a little confused, but for a second I thought he was a hotel employee trying to make friends with my toddler. He ended up staying near me for an additional minute or two, just looking at me and my toddler. I ended up telling him I needed to go and he abruptly left. I looked at the napkin and saw his full name and a hotel room number. I was a little confused, thinking he had given me the wrong paper, but then I looked at the paper and it was a drawing of me and my toddler and a few trees or an island. At this point, I was a little confused but not alarmed, and we didn't have anywhere we had to be, so we sat down in this little restaurant for a while to wait for my husband. While we waited, I noticed the man from before walking around and looking into the restaurant. I ended up looking through the menu a few times (whenever he walked by) to appear to be busy.

After 10-15 minutes or so, my husband (37M) was back and we explained to him what had happened. We were confused but not alarmed, and we thought it was maybe a friendly gesture from a hotel employee and he had gotten bored or lonely and wanted to be friends. We have tipped all the hotel staff before and they appear to be very poor and underpaid, so we thought maybe he just wanted to get a tip or an attention. (Note: We usually tip bartenders and restaurant staff, and the housemaids. We have friends who have been to all-inclusive resorts and some tips are required, while we were not required to tip) We decided to forget about it and move on with our dinner.

After dinner, we decided to stop by the gift shop for some more water and some snacks. (We usually pack some snacks and water but didn't have any on hand at this point) The man who gave me the napkin with drawing was in the gift shop. I immediately looked at my husband and we exchanged a look. We were a little confused but we didn't feel like we needed to leave, so we grabbed our things and went to pay for them. The man was behind us and he continued to look at us while he waited for us to pay. We left the shop, and we went to the room to look up the man's name (I had written it down). We looked him up and couldn't find anything on social media, which I thought was unusual as most of the hotel staff (especially the younger ones) have social media and they usually post pictures of the hotel they work at. It was now dark, so the hotel was a little more lit up and we decided to take a walk around the hotel to get some fresh air while our toddler slept.

We walked around the main area (included the bar and the multiple restaurants, the beach, etc.) for a little while. Every few minutes, we kept seeing the man walking in the opposite direction of us. My husband noticed there was only two employees working at the bar, and then an employee that was sitting at the bar working on a laptop. We asked the employee at the bar who the man was, and they said they'd never seen him before. We also asked the employee at the bar to look at the napkin with the drawing and see if they knew who was drawing it and they didn't recognize it. We then went to the employee working on the laptop at the bar and asked if he recognized the drawing. He looked at the napkin and immediately told us that it was the head of security at the hotel. We asked him if he knew what had happened and he said the head of security had been fired two days prior. My husband and I immediately freaked out.

We immediately called security and asked them to meet us at our location. We told them our story and they immediately told us we needed to leave the main area and go to our hotel room as it wasn't safe. They didn't think the man was a current employee and thought he had been let go and that he was most likely a threat. We asked them to look up the room number that was on the napkin and it was a fake room number. So, we were told that the only way to see him was to ask for a room key. My husband and I were a little frustrated with how little the hotel staff knew about their employees and how little they cared about the employees' well-being. We were told that the hotel would do a search of all the rooms that the man had access to and that they would meet with us in the morning to see what had happened.

We left the main area and went to the room. It was a little far from the main area, but it was near the pool. The room had a patio with no fence around it, so if someone had access to the pool, they could easily get to our room. The hotel staff had given us an additional lock for the door, but we knew it wouldn't make a difference. We ended up staying up all night and keeping an ear out for any noise near our room. I also stayed on the phone with my mom, who is a police officer, and she was also freaked out and stayed up with me. In the morning, we met with hotel staff and they told us they were unable to locate the man and didn't have any information on him. We immediately packed our bags and left the hotel. We called the airline and they were able to get us on the next available flight, so we left and went to a different resort on the other side of the country.

TL;DR: Vacationing in the Dominican Republic and a potential hotel employee was giving my daughter and me weird looks and then stalking us after I received a creepy drawing of us
