Worst Experience in My Life

This happened to me in college. I don't know if I posted this story before in this sub, but if I did, my apologies. This story is 100% true, and it's one that I remember every day of my life.

It happened two years ago, but even now, I think about it daily. It was the summer going into my sophomore year. I was a senior camp counselor at a summer camp for underprivileged kids and kids with disabilities. I was a counselor for a week for 14 boys with special needs. It was a great time, and I loved the experience. The last day was the worst, and I'll never forget it.

During the camp sessions, we take the kids to a lot of activities, including swimming. For the swimming activities, we use pool noodles for buoyancy, water wings, and swim vests. At our camp, we encourage kids to learn and do things on their own, despite their limitations. I had two campers that got to swim with swim vests. We go into the pool, and we're just letting the kids have fun. One of the campers with a swim vest comes up to me, and I hold his hand and help him walk around the area of the pool we were in. That's when I heard a voice behind me.

"You look like you know what you're doing."

I turn around and see a woman standing behind me, smiling. She's wearing a read shirt, which means she was a lifeguard. I said thank you, and the woman goes on to say, "I'm going to be the new person to take the kids to the sinks to wash up in the locker room after swimming." I thought that was strange but went with it. I thought she was just a volunteer. She didn't have the usual name tag like everyone else at the camp.

I asked her, "are you one of the volunteers?" She just wiggled her head and said, "Kind of." My instincts were telling me that something was wrong. She wasn't like the other volunteers. We usually get a background check before volunteering with kids, but I figured that maybe they cut corners on that. I could never tell, and I thought that maybe they did, this one time.

We finish up at the pool, and it's time for the kids to shower. Usually, the counselors help the kids shower in the locker room, but instead, the woman I met in the pool says she'll take care of it. I was a little hesitant but decided it would be okay and went along with it. I had a camper in a wheelchair, and instead of going into the main locker room, she said we can go into the handicap section, which has a separate walk-in shower.

I take the handicapped camper with the rest of the campers into the main section, and the lady takes the one in the wheelchair into the handicap section. When the main group is done, I go check on her and see if she needs any help. I go into the handicap section, and that's when I saw it. I opened the shower curtain, and the woman was in the shower with him. I freaked out and immediately left the handicapped stall and went to get help.

She never ended up being arrested, but the camp had a screening process for volunteers. Background checks were mandatory.

I've always felt bad about it because if I had just listened to my gut, it might not have happened. It was horrific, and I pray that the camper never remembers what happened and pray it never happens again.

EDIT: Thank you for all of the comments and awards. I appreciate all of them. I'm really glad that posting this story has helped me by getting it off of my chest. It's something that I really needed to do. Thanks again.

EDIT 2: I just looked back at the comments. I apologize for not responding. I read all of the comments, and I want to thank you all again for all of them.
