ELI5: Is there anything I can do to make anything I buy less prone to breaking down?

EDIT: I'm a college student. It is not financially possible for me to always buy new. I'm looking for ways to make things last longer.<br><br>EDIT: I buy what I can used, but a good amount of things are not available used.
