What the hell is going on in my class tonight?!

I teach night classes 3 evenings a week at a mid sized university. I have 3 sections that all meet in the evenings. My classes are always well behaved and respectful. You can see the exhaustion in their eyes as night classes drag on, but they’re always well behaved. <br><br>I have NEVER had an issue with the students in my classes. I had a HUGE issue tonight though. Students were arguing with ME and WITH EACH OTHER. People were talking over me loudly, students were getting mad at each other for not being able to hear me. Students were mad I wasn’t repeating myself for the 10th time and students were mad I WAS repeating myself. <br><br>Then, there was a huge fight on campus between 2 students in one of my classes. It was terrifying. The whole room erupted in a panic. I had to lock down my classroom and call campus police while the poor guy’s friends literally begged him to chill out. Campus police came and took him away. Then he called and texted me (he had my number) asking me to drop the charges. I was FLOODED with text messages from students in that class asking him to leave them alone. <br><br>All of my classes have just been super annoying tonight. I’m tired, overwhelmed and thankful to be safe at home. Has anyone else had a day like this in the last week or so? What’s going on with the vibe in the country?! It feels like something in the atmosphere is “off”!!
