What are some concrete, historical examples of the dangers of religio-political fundamentalism?

I’d like to see some examples of what happens when religious fundamentalists get a hold of political power, and the effects it has / has had on the people of a nation and culture, as well as the dangers that it poses not only for the people among and under whom the fundamentalists operate, but for the world at large.
