I believe that the Mongol Empire, or the largest contiguous empire in history, saw the least amount of backlash and criticism during its reign.

Yes, they did slaughter many innocent people like the Hungarians for example, but there were so many other empires that had far more brutal practices in comparison like the Aztecs. The Mongols rose to power in the 13th century in Central Asia under Temüjin, or Genghis Khan and practiced a unique form of governance where the law of the land was well organized and kept the population relatively happy.

Yes, there were punishments such as beheading, but the main goal of their laws was to keep the nation stable, and they were quite tolerant of minorities as well.

The Mongols also did not practice imperialism like other empires in the sense that the ruler would impose his own culture over the entire empire, but rather kept traditional customs and allowed people to worship their native beliefs.

Yes, there were exceptions to this, but compared to other empires they were far more tolerant.

The Mongols also were not overly tyrannical and did not rule by an iron fist like other empires.

They did in fact have a national assembly to settle disputes in the capital city of Karakorum.

I don’t really see any reason for the Mongols to be hated considering their reign was not as brutal as other empires during the same time in history.
