My elderly mother said a man came to her door passing himself off as my husband, and that she thought I was home already.

I don't post here much, but my husband and I own a lake house. We have been there for a couple of weeks, coming home tomorrow, and we are driving. We are about 6 hours from home, and when we were driving I got a call from the local police department back home asking if I was in town. I explained that I wasn't, and that I was about 6 hours out. They said that my mom had just called them stating that a man had come to her door acting like he was my husband. Apparently he was aware of my marital status, and told her that I was in the car, and that we were heading home. She said he asked her if she could give him her extra key so that he (my husband) and I could get in the house when we got there, because she was going to be at church. She said she didn't want to give him a key, but that he said he was tired and wanted to go to sleep when we got home, so she did.

The reason she called the police is because as they were walking to the door he said something like "I'm going to throw the key in the bushes somewhere so that way when my wife gets home she can find it." She said she had just given him the key, so she wondered why he was going to throw it in the bushes. He then said he thought he heard her garage door open and he went running around to the side of her house, jumped her fence, and never came back. She thought that maybe it was me until she heard him running. She called her neighbor who is a retired police officer, and said they found my "extra key" in the bushes.

I'm just in shock. I have no idea how he knew that my mom lives next door, or where we live, or even what my husband looks like. Glad my mom is safe.
