How do I know I'm not an NPC (Non Player Character) in someone's sim?

So I wake up in the morning and I have the feeling that I have been there before. And it feels like I’ve been playing this role for a long time, but for some reason I don’t have complete control over it. I try to change the course of events, but in the end everything seems to happen as it has always happened. I have the strangest feeling that I have done all this before a million times. It drives me crazy and I want to break free.

The idea that I am an NPC goes back to the thought experiment of philosopher Nick Bostrom: at some point humanity will be able to simulate the consciousness of people. It is likely that the number of simulated people will be many times greater than the number of "real" people. Therefore, statistically speaking, it is more likely that you are a simulated person than a "real" one.

This thought experiment reminds of the idea of the "butterfly effect" from chaos theory, where even the smallest change in the weather (like a butterfly that flaps its wings) can cause a massive change somewhere else. If the simulated people were to free themselves from their deterministic course of action, how would the "real" people react?

If I were to deviate from the normal course of action, would they try to prevent me from exposing the whole illusion and informing other NPCs? Or would they even allow me to free myself, in order to study how an NPC would behave in a "real" world?
