I saw something on the evening news that I can't explain

I'm a nurse. I regularly do 12 hour night shifts at our local hospital. We have a shared lounge room where we take a break every few hours to recharge. It's got a small tv and some armchairs and a fridge. And usually a tablet or two for bringing in our own digital media.

I was sitting in there last night when another nurse/RN came in and put her hand on my shoulder and said, "hey, don't you usually watch the news this time every night?"

I did. I don't know why. I'm not really a news person. But once I start a habit I can only stop it with great effort. So I put my hand on the remote and began channel surfing, looking for the right one.

"Hey," she said. "I thought you always used channel 67."

I did. But I couldn't find it. I surfed through the numbers until I reached 99, then started working my way back down. I couldn't find 67. I gave up and looked at the RN and shrugged.

"Well, there's no point watching another channel. I don't know the schedule."

Instead, I pulled out one of my tablets and opened YouTube. No point in watching tv if I don't know what's on. I found a channel that reads out true ghost stories. I liked it. It was entertaining and brought me closer to my goal of being a sceptic.

I started with a video that sounded particularly interesting: "Terrifying Nurse Stories". I liked hearing medical staff's experiences as it made me feel closer to their perspective of the story. After that, I saw one called "Terrifying Doctor Stories". Then "Terrifying Hospital Security Guard Stories".

I was starting my 4th video when I decided to delete the app. I didn't believe any of the stories and I figured it was just a bunch of people making up their own stories for karma or something.

As I worked the rest of my shift, I couldn't help but think about it. It was too ridiculous. Hospitals are not these magical places where anything can happen. It's just a normal place with a lot of rules. That's all.

But then I went back to the lounge room for my next break. And I saw it.

One of the other nurses had changed the channel to channel 67. I guess she had found it.

Someone was talking on the tv. "And in local news: A man was arrested yesterday after several reports came in of someone sneaking into a house and watching a family sleep.

Nothing was stolen, although the burglar was caught with a small notebook and pencil, but it has left the family and surrounding community in a state of fear."

I watched in awe. It was the news, and it was perfect. They had the perfect anchor. I recognised the Looney Tunes theme playing as they went to commercial. Everything was exactly as it should be.

But...I had never seen this before. Had I?

"#BugsForPresident" was trending on social media, there were polls asking "which cartoon character would you rather run for president: Bugs Bunny or Donald Trump?"

And then the next story caught my attention. "A new study has been released about the health effects of teeth grinding. Someone was quoted saying 'don't focus on teeth grinding, focus on why you're grinding your teeth in the first place'."

I did grind my teeth. I ground my teeth so much I had to have my wisdom teeth removed because they had ground them down so much. I had never heard this quote anywhere before in my life.

The next story was about some arrest. Some guy who had snuck into a house and watched people sleep. The next story was about some new study thingy.

Then, the anchor said, "and finally, a story our viewers may be interested in. Reports are coming in of a mysterious hospital where strange, supernatural events are occurring. If you have any more information on this, please let us know."

I watched as the camera sputtered, glitched and failed. Then went black. The screen went blue, saying "signal lost". Then, the tv turned itself off.
