Why is it only considered professional to give notice when leaving a job?

I read an article on LinkedIn talking about how giving notice is considered professional and important, but why? How come it’s on the employee to put their career on hold to help their current employer? What’s professional about not being able to pursue new opportunities just because your current job isn’t good for you?

I feel like it shouldn’t *always* be expected just cause it’s professional. I feel like every situation is different and there’s certain circumstances where it’s okay not to give notice. Like if you get a new job offer, just put in your 2 weeks. But if you’re leaving a job because of a hostile work environment or you’re being sexually harassed, I don’t see why you need to give notice. Your career and well-being should be more important than your old job.

I don’t know it just seems like it’s always on the employee to put others first and it *shouldn’t* be like that.
