Why do companies have different branding in the US than overseas?

Apple calls their stores in the US "store" while their stores overseas they call them "shop" which is a term more familiar to Europeans. <br><br>McDonald's in the US calls themselves Mickey D's while overseas they are called Macca's. <br><br>Subway from a US based company calls sandwiches subs in the US while the stores overseas call sandwiches from subway sandwiches. <br><br>Why do companies do this?
