The freeway system in the US was originally designed for military defense and not freeway systems.

I know some people might be thinking, "free ways or whatever", but I want to expand on that with some points that explain why the US originally made the freeways. The first point is that it was made for defense. Because of car manufacturing and being able to produce cars, the US was able to make tanks, planes, and other heavy equipment faster than ever before. Because of car manufacturing and production, the US was able to make it's own military equipment, which no one else could do. Because of this, other countries started to take the US more seriously in terms of military might. With this came the idea that the US could be invaded by other countries. Eisenhower being the smart man he was, recognized that the US didn't have a system for getting troops and cargo in mass amounts from one side of the US to the other. This was a problem that needed to be addressed. From car manufacturing and production, the US was able to make the freeway system for the original purpose of being able to drive military equipment from one side of the freeway system to the other side of the freeway system.

Also, it was made for economic and consumer reasons. As mentioned previously, the US was the only nation in the world that could make it's own military equipment because of car manufacturing and production. They could create cars at an alarming rate. Well, if you're able to produce that many cars or any thing for that matter, you got to sell them. Hence the freeway system. The freeway system was originally made for being able to drive multiple cars on one street, which is not a strange concept. The thing is the freeways are built longer and wider than a normal street, which allows for more cars to be on it. So that's the next reason as to why the US made the freeway systems.

As a result of this, the US was able to grow. One point is that it was able to expand as a nation. Now I'm not talking about the western expansion of the US. This happened long before the US made the freeways. I mean it was able to grow as a nation because commerce was able to be transported easier. Large companies, big box stores, everything was able to grow because the freeways existed. Also, it created car culture in America. Because of this came other companies like gas stations, restaurants and fast food chains, and hotels. This is another thing that allowed the US to grow because these companies created jobs and money. Finally, it created a sense of individualism. Because of the freeway system, people were able to go wherever they wanted. This created a sense of community and individualism and made people feel like they could be free.
