report
This one belongs to a non-binary person who was struck and killed on a four lane divided road with bike lanes on both sides. A car drifted into the bike lane and struck them. The driver was not issued a ticket or a fine. The driver was not arrested. There will be no prosecution. No one gives a shit.

There is a parking lot right behind this bike. There’s a tree and bushes and a couple of large rocks. Why don’t they just lock the bike up to a tree when they park it? This is how we end up with ghost bikes.

Edit: I should clarify that I’m talking about “ghost bikes” that someone has set up as a memorial. With the same paint, same chain lock, same style. An homage to the original ghost bikes.

Edit2: I am not saying that the victims should not have been riding their bikes on the street. I don’t see the point in these ghost bikes because they aren’t really accomplishing anything. I don’t think putting a bike and a tree just to mark a spot helps anyone or accomplishes anything because it doesn’t change anything. I do think that ghost bikes were important in raising awareness when they were first started but that was over 20 years ago. Putting a bike in a tree is pointless and futile. I’m also not blaming the victim. I’m saying that there is a pattern of people locking their bikes up to trees when they park them. And I believe that parking a bike on the street to “mark a spot” is also futile.

Edit3: I am not calling these people stupid. They are also victims. Victims of terrible laws, and a lack of infrastructure, and (sometimes) careless or reckless drivers. I absolutely believe in more and better infrastructure. I believe in prosecuting drivers who carelessly injure or kill other road users. I’m a daily bike rider and I think that cars are the problem not the bikes. And I still think that marking a spot with a bike is pointless.
