How do people survive in Maine?

I’m from Texas. We do have some cold weather but not by much. i once went to Maine and it was freezing. Then I looked at the gas and electric bill on some random house it was like 2500 a month. Also gas stations were expensive. The roads were icy as anything and the salt to melt the ice was less than cheap. I’m just wondering how people survive up there. The cold and ice and salt really got to me.
