My (M28) wife has an apartment off campus, and I had no idea.

We live in a university town. I'm 28, I work full time for the school, my wife is 25 and in her last year. We live in one of the new complexes just outside of campus that accepts younger kids. Our unit is one of the full bedroom models. My wife is a very smart, capable, and strong willed woman. However, she sometimes struggles with focusing on a task at hand. This happens a lot with her school work. She will go out of her way to avoid a task she finds boring, and it will take her 5-10 times longer to finish than it should be. Usually this means that I need to take work home. Luckily, my job is mostly data analysis and doesn't always require me to be in the office.

My wife is very involved in school. She is in a sorority, on the crew team, holds a role in student government, and volunteers at the local animal shelter. She works hard to make sure all this is balanced with school, and she does a good job. The issue is that she often gets overstimulated and finds it hard to focus on homework when she is at the house. This is why I take work home; so she has somewhere quiet to be.

That being said, things were good. However, over the past three months, my wife has been spending more and more time at the house. She will sometimes have a morning class at school, and she will just stay on campus the rest of the day to study. I don't think anything of this, as she does this once or twice a week pretty regularly. With her final year, she has started to have more night classes. A couple times a week she will have a 6pm class, and I will usually meet her at the restaurant or she will meet me at the gym after and we will go to bed at our normal hour. She does tend to be more tired on these nights.

Last week I had to drop off some papers to the Dean's office. I left work around 3:30, dropped off said papers, and decided to walk around campus a bit. It was a really nice day, and I hadn't been this deep on campus in awhile. She had a 2pm class, so I knew she was done, but she usually headed to the library for a bit. I decided to take a walk by the library, and see if she was there. If she was, we could grab an early dinner off campus. I walked in, and I couldn't find her. I had a feeling she might be at the crew house, and when I walked by, that is where she was. Her car wasn't there, however, so I was a bit confused. We chatted for a few minutes, and I asked her how she got there. She said she took an Uber. I asked why she didn't just drive, and she said she parked her car in the parking garage, and they called an Uber for her from there.

I thought this was odd, but I didn't question it too much. We talked for a bit, and then I headed home. During dinner that night, I asked why the parking garage? She said the street was blocked off, and the cops directed her that way. That eased my mind a bit. Later that night, she was doing some reading before bed. She had a textbook and a magazine out. I noticed the magazine was addressed to her, but had our city and our university. I asked if she had a second subscription, and she said yes. I was a bit confused because I thought the address for the second subscription was supposed to be her parents, but I didn't question it.

When I was brushing my teeth that night, I started thinking about everything that seemed strange, and I began to get a bit suspicious. I decided to do a little work the next day, and take a walk around campus again. This time, I decided to walk by the parking garages. When I walked by the one she mentioned, I noticed that above it was student housing. I looked it up as soon as I got home, and lo and behold, there was the building she had an apartment in.

I was shocked. I didn't know what to do. I just went back to work.

When she got home that day, I acted like everything was normal. I tried to pretend like I didn't know, but it was killing me inside. I knew that I had to act normal, and wait until the right time to bring it up. That time came last night. We had a pretty quiet dinner, and she was heading to bed at her usual hour. As she was brushing her teeth, I told her that we needed to talk. She asked what it was about, and I told her I would tell her in the bedroom. When we got there, this is what I said:

"I know you have an apartment on campus. I am not mad. I am just confused. When did you get it? Why do you need it? Please tell me the truth."

She started crying. She told me that she had gotten it over the summer, and it was hers alone, no roommates. That she needed a place to focus, and be alone sometimes. She said that she has been there more lately because her classes have been hard, and she needs to spend more time on campus. She also mentioned that living in the house with me was starting to distract her from school. I asked her if she was happy, and she said she was. She also apologized for lying to me, and she knows she should have told me. I told her that I was happy that she was happy, and that I felt a bit betrayed over not knowing.

It's morning now, and we haven't really talked. I am leaving for work, and she is heading back to campus. I told her I am leaving for work, and she asked if I was okay, and I told her yes. I also told her to go back to her apartment, and that I would likely see her tonight.

I am not sure where to go from here. I am conflicted. On one hand, I am upset. She lied to me, and went behind my back. On the other hand, I feel bad. I am the one who works, and she is the one in school. Even though we split the cost of our house, I fully support her Crew and sorority expenses. She has to rely on me for a lot of things. I feel bad because she needed a place to escape, and she felt she couldn't tell me.

Where do I go from here? Should I suggest a trial separation... or something more? Am I in the wrong?
