I know many of you have had the idea of reading books suggested to you by parents, classmates, sages, etc., but many of you undergo a great deal of resistance to the idea of reading books. You know why that is: nuts and bolts, it’s hard.

But maybe audiobooks/the spoken word can be a better way for you to learn from books. In fact, a lot of us can be more easily convinced to listen to books than to read them physically.

The reasons for this are akin to why some of us prefer easier, saccadic ways of reading over slower and more methodical ways of reading. saccadic nuts and bolts - when we have the ability to choose how we read, we are very likely to push through our reading tasks as quickly as we can, because this method of reading is very laborious to us.

On the other hand, with audiobooks (and language in general), we encounter words and ideas in a more fluid, linear progression. In other words, we don’t need to constantly scan with our eyes, so we can potentially go through and absorb books faster.

The other reason that audiobooks are more likely to be pushed by others for reading is that a lot of books are not optimally laid out to teach you things, especially if they are not textbooks. Textbooks, as mentioned above, are optimized for studying, but many other books don’t necessarily have this priority. In this case, especially if you are looking to learn more, an audiobook, when enhanced with additional learning aids, can be an excellent way to learn.

For example, I have an audiobook app that allows me to enhance audiobooks with a few different tools. This is an example of some of the highlighted notes that I have for a science book:

Summarized Notes:
Plant roots can be strengthened in poor-quality soil by the addition of microorganisms like mycorrhizal fungi, which have large surface areas and can gain nutrients from the surrounding soil environment.

Plant roots can be strengthened in poor-quality soil by the addition of microorganisms like mycorrhizal fungi, which have large surface areas and can gain nutrients from the surrounding soil environment.

***Exercises:***

4.4.1: Match the following terms to their definitions:

4.4.2: Match the following terms to their definitions:

4.4.3: Match the following terms to their definitions:

4.4.4: Match the following terms to their definitions:

***Recitation:***

4.4.5: What are 3 types of plant roots and their uses?

4.4.6: What are 3 types of plant roots and their uses?

4.4.7: What are 3 types of plant roots and their uses?

4.4.8: What are 3 types of plant roots and their uses?

4.4.9: What are 3 types of plant roots and their uses?

***Mnemonics:***

4.4.10: Make a list of all the main components of plant roots.

4.4.11: Make a list of all the main components of plant roots.

4.4.12: Make a list of all the main components of plant roots.

4.4.13: Make a list of all the main components of plant roots.

4.4.14: Make a list of all the main components of plant roots.

***Geography:***

4.4.15: What is the process through which plant roots absorb nitrogen-rich compounds from the surrounding soil environment?

4.4.16: What is the process through which plant roots absorb nitrogen-rich compounds from the surrounding soil environment?

4.4.17: What is the process through which plant roots absorb nitrogen-rich compounds from the surrounding soil environment?

4.4.18: What is the process through which plant roots absorb nitrogen-rich compounds from the surrounding soil environment?

4.4.19: What is the process through which plant roots absorb nitrogen-rich compounds from the surrounding soil environment?

***People:***

4.4.20: What are the different types of plant roots and their functions?

4.4.21: What are the different types of plant roots and their functions?

4.4.22: What are the different types of plant roots and their functions?

4.4.23: What are the different types of plant roots and their functions?

4.4.24: What are the different types of plant roots and their functions?

***

Summarized Notes: Plant roots can be strengthened in poor-quality soil by the addition of microorganisms like mycorrhizal fungi, which have large surface areas and can gain nutrients from the surrounding soil environment.

Takeaway: Plant roots can be strengthened in poor-quality soil by the addition of microorganisms like mycorrhizal fungi, which have large surface areas and can gain nutrients from the surrounding soil environment.

Some of you might be surprised at how those highlighted notes just went on forever. But the idea is that you can use more tools than you would in a regular book. For example, I can make Anki cards and have recitation and geography tests. I can also make a note and have it be highlighted and bolded.

So s nuts and bolts, there are many more tools available to you with audiobooks than with physical books.

So to answer nuts and bolts - why audiobooks? With audiobooks, you have a number of tools available to you that you do not with physical books. This means that if you are struggling with reading physical books, this can be akin to hacking your reading process (making easier). Audiobooks can be easier to listen to than physical books are easier to read, and with the right tools, you can use audiobooks to learn new things, especially if saccadic reading is tiring to you.
