An app that eliminates the notion of FOMO by reducing social media usage.

One of the biggest problems people face with social media is the fear of missing out. With people pretending that their lives are full of adventure and excitement, it makes us feel miserable about living a mundane, ordinary life. The thing is, we know deep down inside that most of the fun we see is projected, but it doesn’t change our perception. We wish that we could live a life like others by actually putting the phone down and going out.

My idea is an app that triggers an alarm whenever you pass a certain limit on social media by tracking your screen time. This will only serve as a reminder that you need to use that hour (for example) productively. The app itself will only account for the screen time you use on social media, not the screen time of your entire phone. This way, you can still use social media without going over your time limit.

Another idea is to have a feature that displays all of the times you dipped into social media for the day. If you clicked on a post and went back a second later, that will be displayed as an amount equal to the number of times you do it daily. If you scrolled for 3 mins and put it down, that will be displayed as 3 mins. However, the app will not automatically count the time spent on other apps and websites following clicking on a post.

For example, let’s say you clicked on a post on Instagram, but you actually were on the post for 5 mins instead of 3. The app will only count it as 3 mins and add it to your screen time. If you then clicked on the post but was only on it for 3 mins, the app will add it as a separate event with the same time.
