I’ve seen a lot of people berating themselves for not understanding the gravity of this situation earlier. <br><br>You are not an idiot. Think back to how you felt when you first heard about AI. Did you think it was a cool science project? An exciting future technology? That’s because it was. That’s how it was pitched. That’s how it was portrayed. <br><br>Then it became this behemoth overnight. You heard about GPT and how cool it was. How it was the future of writing and art. You heard about how it was going to change the future of code. How it was going to make your life easier. <br><br>There was never an immediate red flag, especially if you don’t work in tech or academia. You don’t know how much of a threat it is until you see things start to unravel. You don’t see the chaos until it happens. <br><br>Even those of us who did see the threat saw each incremental step as an isolated incident. Not all of us saw how much damage it could do until it did. <br><br>So please don’t feel bad. We didn’t have a crystal ball. We were told it was going to be cool. We didn’t think it was going to change our careers, our mental health, our relationships. <br><br>You’re not an idiot for not seeing it earlier. You’re not an idiot for supporting it earlier. This situation was never black and white. This shit was confusing. We were never given a clear map of the situation. <br><br>I don’t know how many times I’ve heard, “I wish I would have seen this coming.” <br><br>You’re not an idiot. The world is at war. That’s it. That’s all.
