How do you keep your washer from getting smelly?

I had to clean my washer's drain pump, and a while later after switching it back on, I realized that the washer was still dank and stinky because the drain hose makes a loop under the washer, full of water. <br><br>I've heard of putting vinegar + washer cleaner in there. But washer cleaner is just expensive. Is there a way to AVOID having to do washer cleaning? It seems like just a maintenance task full of scams while my wallet stays empty. Thanks guys!
