AITA for not letting my 16 year old son pay for his date

I 37m have a 16 year old son. He won some money in the lottery and it’s his pocket money. So he wanted to go on a date with this girl he’s been crushing on for some time. He wanted me to take him to this restaurant where he could take his date. I was hesitant at first because I dont want him to pay for the date, he’s still a kid. But he insisted on it. I could see that he’s very excited so I said okay. I had the idea to ask the restaurant if he could pay for the date that way he would still have the date of his dreams without paying for it. They agreed. When we arrived at the restaurant my son was so happy, he told me he couldn’t wait to tell the girl about it, I told him that he won’t be paying because it’s on the house. He was very confused, I told him the truth. He was upset and said that it’s embarrassing, because he wanted to look “cool” in front of the girl. I told him it shouldn’t matter, but he was still upset. 15 minutes later the girl was there, she didn’t know what was going on but was thanked by the restaurant for letting them have this nice gesture. She was very happy and my son looked like he wanted to crawl under a table because he was so embarrassed. So I told her the truth. She was so upset, she told my son that he was very immature for doing something like this, she was about to leave so I stopped her, and told my son to go to his room. When she was gone I scolded him for his behavior because he could have made the girl happy and still have his date. He started crying so I gave him a hug and told him it’s okay. Was I the a hole here?

Edit: You all are right, I didn’t think this through and made it worse. I should have just allowed him to pay.
